Historical Atlas Maps and Geographic Illustration of Azerbaijan
Atlas-e Tarikhi-ye Naqshe-ha va Tasvir-ha-ye Joqrafiyaee-ye Azarbaijan
The main purpose of the book is focused on the study of cities and villages of Azerbaijan. This means that all concepts of Azerbaijan on the map included in the description of each map is introduced. Certainly with regard to providing maps and language courses in the book, we are faced with different names and sometimes obsolete. As a result, one of the basic functions of research, studying the evolution of the concepts of geographical location and time is based on Maps. The oldest maps of the book belong to the first century AD and the latest maps belong to mid-twentieth century.
The geographical position of Azerbaijan and its relevance during the two thousand years has been investigated. In total, 190 geographical Maps out of mass of collected and classified ones are selected. Credit of Map author, the scientific information presented in Maps, not altered Maps; continued compliance during the period the Map was not altered, were the factors for selection of 190 Maps. Determination the extent of the territory of Azerbaijan is another important inevitable result of book.
Maps often have made historical Azerbaijani territory clear. (Since the time it was vast state of Great Median dynasty up to present time when its political borders have been formed). This major historical geography event in the course of millennium has been clearly documented by the Maps. Unambiguously it has to be said that the historical Azerbaijan is identified by current provinces of East and west Azerbaijan and Ardabil province. Although in the course of time, borders of Azerbaijan has been sometimes expanded and sometime limited. As in line of said events, from east borders parts of Gilan Province, from south cast, parts of Zanjan Province, cities of Jebal and from south, cities of Kurdistan Province, from west Parts of Anatoly and parts of Armanestan from north have been gained or lost. But ancient cities such as Ardebil, Tabriz, Marand, Maragheh, Khoy, Salmas etc. have not been identified by any other name but Azerbaijan.
The first chapter of the book is about how Cartography of Azerbaijan in different styles and schools of the world has been drawn. As it is necessary, brief explanation of history cartography is submitted and then the condition under which Azerbaijan is drawn in different maps are explained. In fact the subjects of first chapter in addition to introduction, covers briefing the reader of drawing technic of the maps. The section where Azerbaijan's drawings on the Maps are checked, new information on the studies of Azerbaijan is presented.
The second Chapter is the main body of the book wherein all the maps are presented in seven chapters.
The title of first chapter of the second part is "Azerbaijan in the Maps of Islamic period". Allocation of one entire chapter to Maps of Islamic period is the result of detail researches of author about Islamic cartography which was subject of formerly published book by Iranology Foundation under the name "description of Iran and its regions" in year J390. The different shape and nature of these maps is excuse to separate them from other maps of the book. In addition to the unique data, these maps, in terms of time, have filled exactly several centuries long gap between ancient Greece and Rome Cartography and one of modern Europe and has greatly helped continuity layout of Maps based on the time sequence.
Second chapter has been dedicated for the study of "Azerbaijan in Iran Maps".
این کتاب نخستین اطلس نقشههای تاریخی آذربایجان به زبان فارسی است. اثری که با معرفی و بررسی و استناد به ۱۹۰ نقشه و تصویر جغرافیایی در فرایندی دو هزار ساله (از سده نخست تا بیستم میلادی) محدوده آنجا را مشخص نموده است. آذربایجان تاریخی با سرزمین، شهرها و آبادیها و مردمان استانهای کنونی آذربایجان شرقی، غربی، و اردبیل ایران است که هویت واقعیت و معنا می یابد. هرچند در جریان پر رویداد و طولانی چند هزاره موجودیت تاریخی فراز و فرودهای قلمرویی نیز به خود دیده است. این اسناد مصور از میان آثار برجستهترین نقشهنگاران تاریخ کارتوگرافی انتخاب شدهاند و بسیاری از آنها برای نخستین بار است که در یک متن چاپی معرفی می شود.
نقشهها با رویکرد توصیفی- تطبیقی مطالعه شدهاند به این معنا که همراه هر نقشه ابتدا شرحی از زندگانی نقشهنگار، شیوه و الگوی ترسیمی وی ارائه، سپس مفاهیم و اسامی محدوده آذربایجان روی نقشه استخراج و با موقعیتهای کنونی تطبیق داده شده است.
